Medicare Advantage Plans Ending in New York for 2027: What You Need to Know
Updated October 2026 | By Plan Medicare
If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan in New York, 2027 could bring important changes to your health insurance coverage.
Insurance companies are discontinuing or modifying certain Medicare Advantage plans across the state, including in New York City, Long Island, and Westchester County.
If your plan is ending, you may need to choose new coverage before January 1, 2027. Even if your plan is continuing, your premiums, copayments, prescription drug coverage, and doctor networks could change.
Here’s what New York Medicare beneficiaries need to know.
Which Medicare Advantage Plans Are Ending in New York for 2027?
For 2027, several major insurers are reducing or restructuring Medicare Advantage offerings nationwide.
In New York, those changes are affecting plans in multiple counties. However, not every plan from an insurer is being discontinued, and a company leaving one county does not necessarily mean it is leaving the entire state.
Whether your coverage is affected depends on your specific plan, contract, and county of residence.
If you have Medicare Advantage coverage through Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, or another insurance company, review your Annual Notice of Change and any plan termination notices carefully.
The most reliable way to determine whether your plan is continuing is to check its exact plan ID and 2027 status. A licensed advisor can do this for you.

What Happens If Your Medicare Advantage Plan Ends?
If your Medicare Advantage plan is being discontinued, you generally have two primary options:
Option 1: Enroll in another Medicare Advantage plan.
You can compare available plans in your county based on premiums, copayments, prescription drug coverage, and provider networks.
Option 2: Return to Original Medicare.
Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A and Part B. You may also want to consider a standalone Part D prescription drug plan and Medicare Supplement insurance to help cover eligible out-of-pocket expenses.
If your Medicare Advantage plan is terminated and you do not enroll in another Medicare Advantage plan, you will generally return to Original Medicare when that coverage ends.
Depending on your circumstances, you may have guaranteed-issue rights to purchase Medicare Supplement insurance.
New York also offers unusually strong Medicare Supplement enrollment protections, making it an important option to investigate.
When Can You Change Medicare Plans for 2027?
Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026.
During this period, you can:
- Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
- Switch from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare.
- Join, change, or drop a standalone Part D prescription drug plan, subject to eligibility.
Changes generally take effect January 1, 2027.
If your plan is not renewing its Medicare contract, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period extending beyond December 7.
However, it is better to review your options early rather than risk interruptions or complications with your coverage.
Can You Switch From Medicare Advantage to a Medicare Supplement in New York?
Yes, and New York has an important advantage over many other states.
New York requires insurers offering Medicare Supplement policies to accept eligible Medicare applicants throughout the year, without denying coverage or charging different premiums because of their health status.
This makes it possible for many New Yorkers to explore Medicare Supplement coverage even if they have existing medical conditions.
Medicare Supplement plans work with Original Medicare, not Medicare Advantage. Depending on the plan selected, they can help reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses and offer broad access to providers who accept Medicare.
Prescription drug coverage generally requires a separate Part D plan.
How to Choose the Right Medicare Coverage for 2027
Before making changes, consider five questions:
- Are my doctors and specialists still participating?
- Are my medications covered, and what will they cost?
- Are my preferred hospitals included in the network?
- What will I pay in premiums, copayments, deductibles, and other costs?
- Would Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement be a better fit?
The right coverage is not necessarily the plan with the lowest monthly premium. It’s the one that fits your healthcare needs and budget.
